How to Make Your Own Christmas Wreath

Christmas wreaths are everywhere this year, from wreath-making classes to stand-out designs, it’s hard to scroll through Instagram without spotting one this month. If you’d like to have a go at making one yourself, then read our step-by-step guide below for everything you need to know– and don’t worry, we’ve had a go and it’s easier than it looks!

What you’ll need:

  • 1 x wire wreath-making ring

  • 1 x Wire bobbin

  • Moss

  • Foliage

  • Pine cones, dried fruits, dried flowers, cinnamon sticks, ribbons to decorate

  • Cut wire lengths

  • String

1.Buy a ring

Buy a wreath-making ring from as little as 80p from Yorkshire Trading Co.

2.Attach some wire

Next step, attach some binding wire to your ring. Simply loop it round a couple of times and make sure it’s secure when you lift it up.

3.Find some moss

Now for the messy part! You need to get your hands on some moss – most garden centres should have some available. Add bunches of moss to your ring, curling your binding wire around to secure it in place as you go. When finished it should look like this.

4.start decorating!

Now for decorating. Use cut-up bits of fir or Christmas tree and create a little bunch using some decorative leaves and foliage such as lily of the valley, eucalyptus, holly, berries, mistletoe etc. – have a rummage around the garden and see what you can find!

5.keep going…

Once you’re happy with your bunch, position it on your wreath at a slight angle (to achieve a fanned look) and wrap the wire around the stems a few times to secure it in place. Carry on making bunches and laying these around your wreath as you go.

If you have some gaps don’t panic – your base layer should be nice and compact now, so push any foliage into the moss and it should stay in place.

6.add the finishing touches

The final touches! Add pine cones, cinnamon sticks and dried fruits. Insert a wire into your decorations and create a U shape – twist a few times and then push the wire into the wreath all the way through to the moss. Twist on the underside and lay them flat so the back is neat and tidy.

Once you’re happy with your creation make a loop using some string and attach this around the top of your wreath.
